Jointly organized by the Asia-Pacific Energy & Science Education Association (AESEA) and the Science Outreach Team of the R.O.C. Military Academy (ROCMA), the premier annual green energy event—the "2026 KidWind Challenge in Asia - South Taiwan Regional"—successfully concluded on October 17 at the ROCMA Student Activity Center!
This regional competition brought together 24 elite teams, over 120 student competitors and advisors, and nearly 70 accompanying parents from across southern Taiwan. Coinciding with ROCMA's Sports Day, Parents' Day, and Campus Open Day, the event was guided by Superintendent Major General Fang-Jung Tan, with opening remarks delivered on his behalf by Chief of Staff Colonel Sun-De-Chang Huang, alongside honored guests from the Education Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government. The occasion highlighted the youth's innovative potential in green energy and scientific inquiry while deepening meaningful exchanges between defense-oriented science education and civilian STEM learning.
Throughout a full day of intensive challenges, each team tested their custom-engineered wind turbines inside standard wind tunnels. From aerodynamic blade profiling and gear ratio optimization to power output efficiency, every step tested the students' cross-disciplinary engineering skills and real-time problem-solving abilities.
The most inspiring moment of this year's event came from the High School Division Gold Medalist, Team "Hsiung-Feng 67" from Kaohsiung Senior High School. Just the afternoon prior to the competition, an unexpected accident severely damaged their wind turbine. Refusing to surrender, the entire team rallied. Their faculty advisor immediately rushed back to the lab late that evening following an official commitment, working side by side with the students through the night until 2:00 AM to complete emergency repairs!
💡 Special Commendation from AESEA:
Even after arriving at the arena, consecutive technical challenges continued to test the Kaohsiung Senior High School squad. Yet, the students demonstrated composure far beyond their years, skipping their lunch break entirely to fine-tune and test their device.
The Head of Judges commended them highly after the competition: "The most commendable aspect of scientific exploration is rarely building a flawless device on the first try, but rather the dedication and relentless determination to solve problems when facing damage and setbacks!" Their passion and grit delivered the most inspiring STEM lesson of the event—a gold medal truly well-deserved!
